Windows 8 on ARM

All signs point to the next version of Windows running on ARM, the emerging global silicon standard for smartphones and tablets. But don't get too excited--it won't happen until 2012 at the earliest and just as likely not until 2013.
For now, let's call the next major release from Redmond Windows 8--though I'm hearing that Microsoft will call it something else. More importantly, I'm also hearing that Windows 8 isn't due until the fourth quarter of 2012, at the earliest.
So that means tablets running Windows 8 won't appear until 2013. Microsoft could do something in the interim with a technology such as a future version of Windows CE but that's not the Windows we all know and love.
A lot can happen in two years and a lot of that on tablets and smart devices running on Google's and Apple's operating systems--not Windows. "Time after time in the high tech industry you see these companies that are successful in one market can't make the leap into the next phase because they're so busy serving their installed base," said Linley Gwennap of the Linley Group, a chip consulting firm.
Granted, that installed base is still the envy of the tech world: both Microsoft and Intel have a plum position serving a global computer market measured in the hundreds of billions of dollars.
But that doesn't mean both of those companies are going to lead the next computing revolution, or even evolution. Many consumers look at the iPad and see a device that represents the future of personal computing. While they don't know--or care--that it runs on a power-frugal ARM processor and slimmed-down version of Apple's OS X, both of those technologies are the foundation for its appeal.
And that future began last April when the iPad was released. "Apple is one of those companies that is really good at bringing out the next product that obsoletes their previous products," Gwennap said. That is a crucial point. Apple is bold enough to entertain the possibility of ultimately cannibalizing its own MacBook product line (it's not hard to imagine next-generation iPads that increasingly impinge on the feature set of the MacBook Air) with the iPad because it knows it has to create new markets to be successful.
Not to rain too much on the Windows-on-ARM parade, but Windows on other platforms--such as outside of Intel's x86--has not fared well, either. Full-featured versions of Windows--what used to be called Windows NT--ran on PowerPC, MIPS, and Alpha processors. However, support for all three platforms was phased out. While certainly ARM holds more promise for Microsoft than DEC's Alpha technology ever did, it doesn't mean that Windows will necessarily be successful on ARM.
And that chance for success gets dimmer every month that Microsoft doesn't bring out a fully optimized version of Windows for tablets. So, the prospect of Windows 8 in 2012 will stick out as a symbol of WinTel's complacency. And how much bigger does Apple (which President Obama cited today in a news conference as an American success story) need to get before it begins to eclipse both of those companies, combined? We should know by 2012.

PTA is still unable to count the actual cellular users in Pakistan

PTA doesn’t know a bit about the exact count of cellular subscribers in the country, claims a story produced in Dawn today.
Paper explains that declared figure of 100.1 million subscribers in the country is not correct as PTA doesn’t maintain a count of in-active subscribers while millions of other subscribers carry multiple sims with them.
Let’s have a look at selected excepts from Dawn’s story
“Since a large number of subscribers have more than one SIM, their actual number in Pakistan is not more than 60 to 65 million,” an official of a telecom operator said.
This is not a hidden fact now that actual subscribers are far lesser than the numbers quoted by PTA, by 40 percent as per estimates. This was first revealed by a report published by Daily Jang in 2008.
In a report produced by ProPakistani (in February 2010), it was further revealed thatactual subscribers in Pakistan were 64 million as compared to 97.3 million declared subscribers by PTA.
Moreover, as a matter of fact, it is technically impossible to have 100 million subscribers in Pakistan with 79 million CNIC holders.
Dawn further writes:
According to a PTA spokesman, there are no international norms to record multiple SIMs being used by the users therefore the PTA records no such data. With regard to “inactive subscriber data”, he says it does not record any such data.
He says 100.1 million subscribers (Sept 2010) are based on the actual data received from the cellular operators.
He further says since the implementation of active subscriber definition, the PTA believes all figures reported by the operators are based strictly on that.
Our commentary on such a response from PTA is as following:
  • PTA is either miscommunicating or they are ignorant of the fact that they can have an exact figure of actual subscribers. This is possible by running a simple DB (database) query on 668 records. It gonna tell them total number of CNICs (or the subscribers) registered with all the operators. (ask me in comments if anyone needs further explanation of this point)
  • If PTA isn’t monitoring the “in-active subscribers” and is totally relying on cellular companies, one may wonder how good are the reports produced by operators. One may question the PTA’s sluggishness and inability to counter-check the head count sent by operators.
  • If PTA isn’t monitoring the cellular companies, public has a right to question the audit of license fee (millions of dollars) they are collecting.

Mercedes electric car

We have heard of very manyelectric cars before, but some of them are not powerful enough, powerful ones don't give you any range or just prototypes that never make it to market. However, Mercedes is planning on making it a production car. Electric SLS AMG E-cell provides really good power, a decent range of 125 miles and really good looks of its fire breathing brother.

This electric car features not one engine like its brother but four motors. Each motor is powering its own wheel which makes the whole system very powerful. How powerful? No, it won't give you more power than ordinary Mercedes SLS (not that this supercar can be called ordinary), but its electric brother gives you up to 528 hp. The petrol version outputs 563 hp.

Having a lot of horses under the bonnet is a good thing but there is also such a parameter as torque (it is responsible for car's acceleration basically). And here our electric SLS AMG monster beats the base petrol model by more than 30% producing 649 ft/lbs as opposed to 479 ft/lbs from the stock car.

Everybody knows that placing an electric motor in a car, four of them in this case, you need to carry around a huge weight of batteries in your car. And this one is carrying as much as 880 lbs more weight than the stock model. Experts say that this addition to the weight killed the car's handling and steering, but Mercedes promise that they will solve these problems when the electric SLS AMG hits auto salons.

Core i9 is out, Core i7-980X is in: 6-core

Apparently, Intel has decided to call the first 6-core Westmere Core i7-980x and not Core i9. In addition, the release may be earlier than expected.
Core i7-980X: 6-core CPU starting March 2010?

The next step in the evolution of desktop CPUs is the six core models from AMD and Intel. Several websites report that Intel accelerated the planned introduction of his Westmere based 6-core processor. It should ship in March 2010, probably around Cebit. First reports said that the introduction should happen until June 2010. Further more, the CPU formerly known as Core i9 now calls Core i7-980X Extreme Edition.

Core i7-980X has six cores together with SMT, 32 nm process and 130 Watts TDP according to a leaked slide from Intel which look authentic. 12 MiB L3, Turbo Boost and socket LGA1366 are mentioned as well. X58 motherboards should be fine for Core i7-980X. Pricing is set somewhere around 999 USD.

However, present details about the netbook indicate that Chrome OS is still in beta and in addition to this till now the atom powered netbook isn’t going to be a mass-market device and there will be only about 65,000 units of Google’s branded hardware, most probably made available to developers. ARM Cortex-A9 a 28nm, 2GHz the beast

Have you ever wondered whether desktop and notebooks processors or smartphone processor are more high-tech? Sure, first two have a lot more computing power, but ARM Cortex microprocessor family – being a well known mobile SoC platform – is waiting for an important Cortex-A9 update later this year. ARM together with GLOBALFOUNDRIES have found a way to optimize High-K Metal Gate technology for Cortex-A9 chip. High-K Metal Gate, or HKMG for short, is industry first 28nm fabrication process technology and I doubt there is a need go to though all small fabrication process advantages here (high-end desktop solutions are only 32nm feature-sized). ARM Cortex-A9 reportedly goes into mass production in late 2010 clocked at around 2GHz. Still, ARM is not out of ideas so far. Even now they are already planning on a 20nm SoC in two year time. Fabrication process is indeed the new clock speed.

Marvell Armada 628(The World's first tripple core processor)

Nevermind what we looking forward to earlier considering mobile processors, we couldn’t predict this – Marvell has already prepared for production its Armada 628 mobile processor featuring three cores. Core management is where new Marvell SoC stands out from the crowd. They all share 1MB of L2 cache but two out of three cores run at 1.5GHz each and handle, so to say, resource hungry tasks such as gaming, video decoding, etc. while the third core runs at just 624MHz and does only routine tasks in the background. So compared to any dual core mobile processor Armada 628 uses less energy which is never a bad feature. Speaking of which, Marvell Armada 628 can playback Full HD 1080p video for 10 hours, playback Hi-Fi audio for 140 hours (these hugely depend on battery, of course), render 3D graphics, process digital images plus so much more. Armada 628 also supports DDR3 memory and USB 3.0 connectivity and I repeat: OEMs can lay their hands on it right now.

    SMS Advertisement

The phenomenon of SMS Advertisement  is getting popular these days. There are many mobile subscribers who are terrified by the bombardment of thousands of text messages on their mobile phones from unknown numbers.
By defination, SMS bomber is an application which sends unlimited text messages to a mobile phone number, leaving the phone subscriber with no option but to switch off his/her phone. Deleting those messages later on is added headache for the users.
The interesting thing about SMS Bomber is that it doesn’t require name/phone number or anything to send messages, instead it only requires target’s phone number – a very secure way to annoy anyone anonymously.
Now you'll wonder that how they get your number?? If so let me know i'll tell you that in other post.
