Is the End Near for Microsoft Zune?

Bloomberg has reported that Microsoft will no longer introduce new versions of the Zune portable media player, mainly because of low demand. According to its source, the Redmond-based company will shift its focus on other devices such as incorporating Zune software onto mobile phones that run on Windows Phone 7.
Introduced in 2006, Zune could not even reach the top five portable media players this year, which was very much dominated by the iPod with 77 percent of unit sales.
Representatives of Microsoft decline to comment about the Zune’s future.
“We have nothing to announce about another Zune device — but most recently have introduced Zune HD to Canada via the Zune Originals store and remain committed to supporting our devices in North America,” the company stated through an e-mail.
